Fry Elementary School surprised one student, announcing that she won a nation-wide contest.
Fifth grader Katherine Smirnov was named first-place winner of the national Invest write essay competition.
The competition asks 4th through 12th graders to choose a publicly trade company to analyze and determine if it’s a good investment for the future.
Smirnov chose the Boeing Company, headquartered in Chicago, and received top prize from more than 2,000 submissions.
“Boeing has been around for 100 years and also if you look into the history, it stayed at a good price and didn’t drop as much,” said Smirnov.
This is the second year in a row a Fry Elementary student place first in the essay contest.
