Members of the Indian community joined Mayor Pradel in raising the Indian flag in front of city hall to celebrate the 67th anniversary of India’s independence.
“We feel it’s important to get the message out that we love you and support all that you do,” said Mayor Pradel. “We just want to make sure you feel welcome and feel like a part of Naperville.”
Performers entertained the audience with cultural dances and songs.
Next year the Indian community wants to move the celebration to Centennial Park and make it a daylong event.
The mayor says Naperville will partner with Oak Brook’s Village President Gopal Lalmalani, who is Indian himself.
“Now Oak Brook wants to get in with us and combine efforts to make a great day out of it,” said Mayor Pradel.
Naperville has hosted the flag hoisting ceremony since 2008.
