And they’re off! This morning, over 2,500 runners gathered at North Central College for the first ever ‘Naperville Women’s Half Marathon and 5K’ presented by Naperville Running Company.
The race’s charity partners were 360 Youth Services and Little Friends Inc., who both received a $5,000 donation.
“The day has been amazing. So we were here before sunrise, and it’s been great to see the energy and the enthusiasm that women are bring to the 5K and the half marathon today, so we’re just thrilled to be here,” said 360 Youth Services chief executive officer, Katy Leclair.
“The organizers are committed to the community, to 360, to Little Friends. North Central College, there is no better running venue here and this has been an event where we’re here on the campus, we’re showing people our beautiful town, we’re highlighting everything we have to offer. We have unparalleled city services so it’s just a fantastic opportunity for the community,” said President and CEO of Little Friends Inc. Kristi Landrof.
The first place 5K finisher was Naperville’s own Jennifer Garrison, coming in at 19 minutes and 30 seconds. And the Half Marathon champ was Wheaton resident Julie Favorite, finishing her 13.1 miles in one hour and 22 minutes.
“It was awesome, I felt so good. The course was beautiful. My first mile was about 6:30, but I progressively got faster and faster and I just felt so good. It was so much fun. I had a couple girls to pace me through the first eight miles and then I felt good enough to pull ahead and I felt really confident coming in and I had a lot of fun with it,” said Favorite.
All finishers got a unique tiara medal, with the top athletes for each race getting an award fit for a queen
