Museums do a lot more than just offer visitors a trip to the past. They also have a major economic impact on communities.
Ford Bell, President of the American Association of Museums, shared the importance of museums at the most recent Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce luncheon.
The 17,500 museums in the United States contribute more than $20 billion to the American economy every year, and employ more than 400,000 individuals.
There are more than 850 million museum visits per year.
“Every one of those visits is an economic opportunity for some community, just as every one of those visits is an opportunity for someone of any age to be educated, to be inspired,” said Bell.
He explained that museums are facing hardships in tough economic times.
He encouraged Naperville residents to speak up and prove that their museums are not only an amenity, but a vital part of their community.
