I-88 Ramp Closures to Route 59

Brake lights, orange cones and long travel times- all part of the route 59 expansion project, but coming soon there’s one more complication for motorists to encounter before things improve.

IDOT and the city of Naperville are warning drivers to use patience as they complete the final steps in the project.

“IDOT is going to be reconfiguring the Interstate 88 and Route 59 into an innovative configuration call the diverging diamond interchange, and so with that traffic will actually cross to the opposite side of the roadway to cross over points controlled by traffic signals,” said Jennifer Louden, Transportation Team Leader with the City of Naperville.

The work to complete the diverging diamond interchange will take about nine days and will close the Interstate 88 exit ramps to Route 59 from Friday, September 11th at 8 p.m. until 5 a.m. on September 21st.

But the short-term inconvenience will be worthwhile in the long haul.

“It has a lot of potential to improve not only safety at the interchange but also reduce congestion through having greater capacity to allow more traffic flow,” said Louden.

Traffic on Route 59 and Interstate 88 will still be open, but entrances to I-88 will be limited to right turns- meaning if traveling North on 59 you can still take the East-bound ramp to 88, and traveling South-bound on 59 you can take the Westbound ramp to 88.

Detours for the exit ramps will use Winfield and Eola Road instead of Route 59 for the week, but during these changes motorists should still be prepared when heading out.

“We always just want to encourage everybody as they move through this area and now with the closures for the next week just to allow more time for travel, follow the posted detours and always be aware that there’s a lot of work going on in the area so drive more cautiously,” said Louden.

The cost of the entire project totals $85 million.
