Record breaking heat brought large crowds to Centennial Beach.
The Park District facility opened for summer over Memorial Day weekend. It was the hottest first weekend in the beach’s history, with temperatures in the mid to upper 90s.
People lined up before the gates were opened to get a chance to cool off in the pool.
“I wanted to swim in the pool,” said three-year-old Erin.
“We wanted to come up where there was water and it’s a Memorial weekend so let’s have fun,” said Marlene Miller, who travelled from Normal, Illinois.
More than 8,300 people headed to Centennial in the first few days it was open.
