The North Central College men’s cross-country team can now add another honor to their trophy case. Governor Pat Quinn recently invited coach Al Carius and the team to his office and presented them with a plaque and proclaimed Friday, January 6th, 2012 as “North Central College Cardinals Men’s Cross Country Day” in Illinois.
“To have this be a part of their memory bank is just very, very special for me as a coach,” said Carius. “I think that as a teacher and a coach your greatest satisfaction is seeing good things happen to people you are associated with.”
This past November the Cardinals won the NCAA Division III cross-country championships; the win was the teams’ 14th national title.
Coach Carius has led the Cards for 46 years. He’s been awarded the Coach of the Year seven times and was also named the cross- country Coach of the Century.
A number of current and former runners, alumni, and college officials were on hand to receive Governor Quinn’s honor.
