It was a family fun filled day at Naper Settlement’s Hometown Picnic that had people of all ages gather to celebrate summer.
“The big thing about this event is the american spirit, kind of the american tradition, it’s the end of the summer and we want families to come together grab a picnic, kind of come on the grounds enjoy a wonderful day with their family,” said Anna Di Cosola, Naper Settlement’s Learning Experiences Coordinator.
The annual tradition gave folks a chance to experience the days of the 19th and early 20th centuries all while enjoying a historic view of the “Grand Old Game” of baseball with the Lemont Quarrymen taking on the Deep River Grinders.
“I’m not a huge baseball fan but it was actually really cool to see the old rules and stuff like that it was very unexpected and fun,” said Hannah Jurik, picnic attendee.
And after relaxing on the lawn to watch the bare knuckle baseball game, folks got to lend a helping hand pumping Naperville’s first firefighting equipment purchased in 1870, which honored the late, Joe Naper.
“This was at the time one of the best and one of the only ways to really shoot water its all hand powered its pulled by hands its pumped and then of course the hose has to be directed by hand, unfortunately though because it is so labor intensive its not just the fire department that helps out you’re gonna have the entire community pumping these handles once every single to try to get the water objected on to whatever’s in danger,” said Justin Stench, Museum Educator.
Other old fashioned things to see included a hula hoop contest, a blacksmith demonstration and to top it off, a visit to a traditional lemonade stand.
“I’m just here helping with the picnic part of it, so we have lemonade and cookies and selling it for 25 cents, it’s more of a realistic price than back then like now,” said Maya.
The picnic ended with gifts for people who entered in the apple pie baking contest which is one of the activities that keep bringing people back.
