Home Burglaries on the Rise

Jewelry, electronics, money and even a 2013 Volkswagen Pasat – These are all items that burglars have managed to steal from Naperville neighborhoods over the last month, sometimes even while homeowners were inside.

Monisha Kothari came home from work only to find someone had stolen all of her jewelry from her master bathroom.

“Emptied out the whole box, took everything. It was very shocking and it’s just so frightening now,” she said. “I’m very disturbed at the whole incident.”

Residential theft is on the rise in Naperville at the time of this taping, there had been 12 burglaries in the last 12 days alone.

“About half of them have been at night with no force, just going in through unlocked doors,” said Sergeant Lou Cammiso. “And the other half [occur] during the day where force is used, where doors are being kicked in or windows [are] being pried.”

Most incidents have occurred in the southern subdivisions, including the White Eagle neighborhood where all homes have an alarm system, prompting the police department to remind residents to activate them and take other precautions.

“We like to make sure that residents call in any suspicious persons or vehicles in the area and make sure they secure their doors,” said Sergeant Cammiso.

And use the deadbolt if you have them since they can’t be popped open like a spring lock can.

As for the recent burglaries, no suspects have been found yet but the police department thinks the incidents could be linked.

“We think that there may be two separate crews going out, maybe a crew hitting at night, maybe a crew hitting during the day,” said Sergeant Cammiso. “So we’re looking for leads. We need leads from the community.”

If you have any leads, the police department asks that you call their general, non-emergency number: 630-420-6666.

“Talk to your neighbors and just be vigilant and alert to any suspicious activity,” said Kothari.
