Holiday Travel – What to Expect and How to Prepare

Expect busy roads, airports, and stations this week, as almost a third of all Americans are traveling for the holidays.

“Well we’re seeing record numbers this year. About 112 million people are travelling across the United States, and that’s about four percent higher from where we were this time last year. The economy is very strong, people feel secure in their job situation, they have more disposable income, and they’re out there spending that money on travel.”

In Illinois, the amount of travelers is 4.4 percent higher than in 2017.

To be prepared on the roadways, AAA says pack your patience, and leave for your destination before or after peak rush hours, and check your ride first.

“We’re expecting to come to the rescue for 960,000 people this holiday week alone,” added Mosher. “So as you’re heading out, make sure that your battery is tested. If you’ve got a battery that’s about three, four, or five years old and it’s going to be particularly cold out.”

And if you’re hitting the roads it’ll be a bargain compared to last year. Across Illinois the average gallon of gas will run you $2.33, down from $2.66 last month and from $2.50 last year.

“We always like to remind everybody to consider no drinking and driving obviously, and to drive safely. Prepare for delays. Have some extra routes in mind and let friends and family know what their travel routes are just so know when they’re to be expected at their destination.”

As for flyers, AAA estimates 6.7 million people will travel by air, the highest level in 15 years.

And those traveling by train or bus will see an increase of travelers by about four percent, with a total of 3.7 million passengers.

Another tip for those heading to the airport this week: look at the TSA website before heading out to check the rules about packages and gifts you may be bringing on board.
