As people start thinking about the holidays, employers in the area are preparing for the busy days ahead of them by beefing up their hiring.
“This year we’re bringing around 25 employees to help with the holiday season, which goes from November to January,” said Arnoldo Soto, Assistant Manger of Operations at Best Buy.
And they’re not alone, Target sales are expected to pick up more than 4% so they’re staying one step ahead of the game with extra employees.
“We’d definitely not be able to get the work done, we have that much more work load just because there’s that many more shoppers and that much more sales where we need the extra help,” said Doug Zumdahl, Store Leader at Target.
Many of these stores have a wide range of positions open, ranging from entry level to experienced.
“We have front end team members, cashiers, sales floor team, members to help the guess and early morning and overnight logistics, members who can help unload the truck and stock the shelves to keep them full for our guests,” said Zumdahl.
And with the surge in online shopping, delivery jobs are on the rise too.
“UPS in the Chicago area is currently hiring more than 4,000 seasonal employees,” said Christine Hand from UPS Communications.
These positions that will likely run until January, include package handlers, a delivery team and tractor drivers.
UPS predicts this will be the busiest holiday season they’ve ever had.
“Six days will likely surpass one single day record of 31 million packages. On a typical day we deliver approximately 17 million packages, so our volume almost doubles on our peak days during the holidays,” said Hand.
By taking on a holiday job you could be setting yourself up with a gift that keeps on giving.
Some of them are actually brought on as a part timer and then if we have any additional roles, we need to fill, we do interviews for that role and then if selected they’re brought on a permanent status,” said Soto.
