December is a month to drink egg nog and celebrate with friends, but according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, December is also one of the most deadly months of the year due to drunk driving accidents.
“During the holiday season a lot of people go out and attend work functions, family parties, and this leads to a lot of socializing,” said Sgt. Lee Martin, Naperville Police Officer. “We see an inclusion of alcoholic beverages at these parties. We also see an increase this time of year that people are drinking and unfortunately getting behind a vehicle.”
To combat this rise, Naperville Police are partnering up with the Illinois Department of Transportation and will be running extra patrols during this season.
“We will have an extra 10 to 15 extra patrols on duty per night,” said Sgt. Martin. “We will be out there in force to try to get some of these people off the road and target the people who are drinking and driving.”
Even though there are extra officers on the lookout, the Naperville Police encourage residents to keep a watchful eye on the road.
“If you have a vehicle that is around you that is driving erratically, speeding, changing lanes, tailgating, or driving without headlights,” said Sgt. Martin, “we encourage you to dial 911 and report that driver to the police department.”
No matter what season it is…drinking and driving is against the law.
