August is national eye exam month. We checked in with a local eye doctor to find out why it’s so important to protect your peepers.
The eyes may be the window to the soul but they can also be the window to a lot of other indicators of your health.
“A lot of times we don’t even know we are walking around with problems with our health and let alone our eyes then because it does affect the eye eventually. For example you may not know you have diabetes but it manifests first in the eyes and they can find it in an eye exam also things like hypertension that also is seen in the back of the eye in the retina. So that yearly exam is very important because other health problems you have can be indicated in the eye,” Dr. Meitfort, US Vision.
During that yearly exam, optometrists are looking for anything from cataracts to muscle strains. Many eye problems have no symptoms and can only be found by a professional.
Back to school is the perfect time to get your eyes checked, as well as your kids – one in four children has vision problems.
