For many who are stuck in the routine of sitting on the couch watching t.v., and snacking on chips and junk food, that habit may be hard to break.
But one group in Naperville is helping ease into the tall task of going from couch to 5k through the Naperville Running Company’s Running 101 Group.
“They show up, they’re excited, a little bit nervous and they want to be runners but they don’t quite know how,” said Jenny Wachter, Running 101 coach. “It starts by running just a bit, 90 seconds, and that’s our first work out. As the weeks progress on we lessen the walking and increase the jogging until at the very end of the program their running 31, 33, 35 minutes.
Throughout the 11-week process, those like Michael Lugowski have been able to turn their life around for the better.
Before beginning the class in October, Lugowski weighed in at 262 pounds, but after training with Jenny and the Running 101 class, he’s down to a healthy 205.
“It’s all about the motivation factor, you have to be motivated personally but the group setting from past experience makes it at least for me 100 times easier,” said Lugowski, a Running 101 participant. “You have other people who have completely different struggles but we grow in different ways along the way.”
The class meets every Saturday and besides physical training, also runs through an educational aspect, like stretching, injury prevention and even confidence.
But if you lack yours, have no doubts, Jenny and Mike say almost anyone can do it.
“I say you absolutely can, the program is for beginners its for people who are sick of being on the couch,” said Wachter.
“It’s called Running 101 for a reason, it’s for beginners, it’s for everybody, every skill set,” said Lugowski.
