The Naperville Fire Department teamed up with the Naperville Park District to install life saving equipment at some local parks.
A new automated external defibrillator, or AED, is ready for use at the south end of Nike Park.
An AED is a portable electronic device that helps re-establish a normal heart rhythm after suffering a heart attack.
“What we wanted to do is put these AEDs out in the community in the event somebody happens to suffer from a sudden cardiac arrest. They can come to the AED help point, push the button, call 911, and the dispatch will release the door giving someone access to the AED and they can go ahead and put that on the patient as start CPR and defibrillation while the dispatch sends the fire companies.”
In only three minutes, cardiac conditions can lead to brain damage or death, with the convenience of proximity, the AED box can dramatically increase the success rate of the patient.
This is just one of three being installed, the others will be located at Commissioners Park and the opposite end of Nike Park.
