It’s a rare instance to see an entire family talk openly about the troubles of drug addiction, but the Lybert’s hope their approach makes an impact.
They started “Your Choice,” a not for profit, bringing awareness to the effects drug and alcohol abuse has on a family.
“We are a prevention program to raise awareness for communities, parents and kids about the dangers of drugs and alcohol. We’ve gone into numerous schools and speak to numbers of kids and share our experiences, me being a drug addict in recovery, and my sister who has never touched drugs – we share our stories in hopes that people learn something from them,” said Tyler Lybert, former addict and “Your Choice” speaker.
The family came out to the municipal center, to share how Tyler’s drug use affected each one of them personally. A different approach than most drug forums.
“Usually you’ll get the mother here, or a father there, or an addict here but it’s an entire family and the fact that its all from the heart, there’s nothing corporate here. It’s people telling their story and being real,” said Lybert.
Partnership for Prevention hosted the forum, hoping to shed light on the struggles families face when a loved one is an addict.
“We know sometimes that families are severely affected by substance abuse and they are hurting and are upset and we really want to help families understand what they can do, that kids do recover, and there is hope,” said Claudia Evenson, an organizer of the event for Partnership for Prevention.
