Drumbeats filled the air at Naper Settlement as Midwest SOARRING Foundation celebrated its 22nd Annual Harvest POW WOW.
It was only fitting as they believe drums are the heartbeat of mother earth and symbolize life and culture.
“That came from the creator, it came from having a vision and each tribe has a different tradition, and you might have someone say which one is correct? They’re all correct,” said artist of the Native American flute, William Buchholtz.
From welcoming guests to join in on traditional dances, to taking a moment to recognize our veterans, the event was full of life lessons on Native American history.
“Sharing with people to see the culture and the dances, some of the kids who were here wouldn’t have seen this if there wasn’t a pow wow here and so they learn stuff they wouldn’t normally learn because it only happens once a year,” said Buchholtz.
This was also a chance for visitors to learn about the extinction of mustangs and pipeline issues harming tribes in North Dakota.
The two-day event will continue on Sunday from 11am to 5pm.
