You may not be able to play guitar like you are ringing a bell, but that doesn’t mean you can’t check out some of the beauties at Shoenherr Gallery at North Central College. The institution couldn’t pass up the opportunity to display the dozens of masterpieces owned by two collectors with ties to the college.
“I heard through people at the college that the Waters family had a collection of signed guitars,” said Gallery Director Nickole Lanham. ” After that I heard the Kelsch family also had a collection, so I approached them to see if we could do one large exhibit.”
A trustee of North Central College, David Kelsch’s collection features instruments made by the most historic and respected manufactures in the guitar industry.
“I think they are works of art,” said Kelsch. “Something that can look that nice and produce those sounds is really kind of special.”
One collection of guitars displays the beauty and craftsmanship that goes into each design, while the other features the signatures of some greatest names in rock history.
Former Dean of Admissions of North Central College, Marguerite Waters began collecting guitars with her husband because of their love for rock music. The two attended concerts to get the guitars signed, and their collection boasts autographs from legends like Eric Clapton, B.B. King, Paul McCartney, and Eddie Van Halen.
“I just looked at a Bon Jovi Guitar and I was like ‘wow’,” said North Central Sophomore Gloria Barnum. “I can’t believe this is at North Central.”
The exhibit runs to April 10th, and it is free to the public.
