Google Expeditions in the Classroom

Students at Georgetown Elementary School got the trip of a lifetime without having to leave the classroom.

Google recently visited their school to take kids on a virtual field trip through their Expeditions program, which allows students to use technology to travel to places where a school bus can’t.

“As we look more and more at our students and being future ready and the opportunities to participate in things that maybe they wouldn’t normally be able to participate in, Google Expeditions just offers that- it’s a way for kids to go all over the world, even to the moon, and it broadens their learning and helps them see things they might not ever get to see,” said Allen Davenport, Director of Instructional Technology for Indian Prairie School District 204.

Through the special cardboard viewfinder, students saw a 3D virtual image that let them travel the ocean and swim with the sharks, take a stroll along the Great Wall of China and wander the jungle, while their teacher read about what they were seeing.

“The monkey’s, some of them are already close up, but if you zoom in you can see their eyes really close,” said Jackson Langendorf, a student at Georgetown Elementary School.

“It was amazing, if feels like you’re right there,” said Amela Zilic, another students at Georgetown.

The teachers picked the expeditions based on their current curriculum in the classroom.
