The Hobson Oak, located near Hobson and Greene Roads, came down on November 17, following the recommendation of multiple arborists. After being in this spot for over two centuries, the tree’s limbs began to die and the trunk had decayed, necessitating its removal.
A crew from DuPage County worked for several hours, taking down the tree piece by piece so others, like the Naperville Parks Foundation and Wehrli Furniture, can work to preserve the Oak’s wood, with plans to later turn it into furniture, jewelry and decorative pieces.
Acorns from the tree will be germinated in order to grow more Burr Oaks in the future.
Naperville News 17’s Evan Summers reports.
