Manicures, scrapbooking and dancing. What seems like an ordinary girls night out for local middle school girls can actually have a positive impact on the young ladies’ futures. Women and girls packed Crone Middle School outside of class time for a little one on one.
For 6th grader Brooke Grigsby and her mom Robbin, the family’s busy schedule often means the two don’t get to spend time together.
“I love to spend time with my brother but it’s nice to get out of my house and just be with my mom,” said Brooke.
“There’s always a mother/son event and a father/daughter dance but it’s unique that they realize the relationship between a mother and her daughter is important,” said Robbin.
The girls all got a chance to paint their nails, make t-shirts and just be together. Administrators at Crone say while the event is all fun and games, it is also a way for young girls to bond with a role model in their lives.
“It’s good to have someone to go to for advice, someone they can talk to and someone they can count on, someone they can trust,” said Elizabeth Pohlmann, Assistant Principal at Crone Middle School.
Nancy Hoelscher runs the Women Involved in Girls Success mentoring program at NCO Youth and Family Services and she says middle school girls have it tough in today’s day and age.
“Girls today are faced with so many challenges,” said Hoelscher. “There are so many negative influences. They need someone outside of the home, or maybe even in the home, to offer that positive influence and shape their character.”
“We help shape them to know what it’s like to be an adult in today’s society,” said Robbin. “I need to be her cheerleader and her coach. In this school environment, in her environment, it just helps her see what she’s intended to be.”
Hoelsher says girls often times find it more difficult than boys to open up and share their problems, and that a mentor doesn’t have to be your mother. It can be an older sister, grandma, coach, teacher or even a complete stranger.
