Though gas prices recently hit their calendar year high, they are currently at a low point when compared to past years.
As of this taping, gas prices around the Naperville area have been averaging about $2.50 a gallon, that’s the lowest they’ve been at this point in the summer since 2005. And AAA says they should stay that way.
“Barring anything we have ever seen, we really think that prices are going to continue to be mild. They have dropped a little bit over the past week; we expect that to continue throughout the remainder of the summer,” said Beth Moser, Spokesperson for AAA.
Even so, Illinois’ average gas prices have been trending about 20 cents higher than the national average, so keep an eye on the pumps if you are traveling out of town, and gas up when you hit the lowest prices.
To help you out with that, AAA has an app called AAA Mobile, which will direct you to the cheapest gas in your area.
Summer is the perfect time for a weekend getaway with destinations that ensure fun for all and fit the bill.
“It appeals to all budgets, you can do something on the fly that’s inexpensive or you can make it more of a luxury getaway depending on what kind of hotel you stay in especially one in Chicago and do it that way or if you want to go to Starved Rock and you want to camp. It really fits anybody’s budget,” said Travel Consultant, at Wehrli Travel, Kristy Crookton.
One of the easiest places to escape to is right in our own backyard – Downtown Chicago. Crookton says don’t write it off because of its close proximity.
“A lot of people forget about the city but I mean there is always something going on downtown and in the city area,” said Crookton.
If you’d like to get a little further away but still enjoy a city atmosphere, check out our neighbors to the north.
“Milwaukee always has a lot with Summerfest up there and other festivals. They have beautiful beaches and a lot of nice museums up there,” Crookton said.
For those who enjoy the small town feel of boutique shops and quaint cafés there are destinations for you too.
“Geneva is great because there are a lot of different shops and quiet and quaint-ness. In that same vein in the St. Joe Benton Harbor area with their beaches. You can rent vacation houses and there are a lot of hotels and motels in the area,” Crookton said.
And to avoid traffic when traveling, Crookton recommends downloading an app like Waze.
