Geneva Man Sentenced in Naperville Case

The Geneva man who pled guilty to charges from the 2014 deadly crash at Quarry Lake in Naperville has been sentenced.

23-year-old Michael Szot will serve one year of periodic imprisonment and four years of probation.

DuPage Judge Brian Telander also required that Szot take monthly drug tests, wear an ankle-monitoring bracelet for three years after his release, and perform 200 hours of community service by recounting his experiences to students.

Szot was charged with two counts of aggravated DUI after plunging his Impala into Quarry Lake in July of 2014. The accident resulted in the death of passengers Sajaad Syed and Mihirtej Boddupalli, both 21, and graduates of Naperville North.

The victims’ families were in the courtroom, and asked that the judge have mercy on Szot.

In a final statement, Szot took full responsibility for his actions that night saying quote “I made the decision that ended their lives.”

Szot will report to jail on April 4, but will be allowed out to attend college and work throughout his one-year sentence.
