Drivers can breathe in a sigh of relief due to the lower prices at the pump. Gas prices throughout the state dropped consecutively every day in September.
The price of a gallon of gas has plunged $0.39 since last month. According to AAA officials the current state average for a gallon of gas is $3.47.
“The gas prices have gone down largely due to the decrease in demand, now that the summer travel season is over, and people are driving less.” Says Nick Jarmusz, Public Affairs Specialist with AAA. “Over the course of last month we have seen the prices slowly start to come down from the peaks we usually see during the summer months.”
The cost per gallon of gas in the state is currently amongst the highest in the nation. According to AAA, Illinois is the eighth most expensive state to purchase gasoline, which is related directly to the more than 6% sales tax imposed.
Jarmusz says that there is currently no reason for gas prices to rise. Analysts expect gas prices to continue dropping in the near future, giving consumers the chance to save money while filling their tanks.
