Twenty-eight students from seven schools brought the heat to Scott Elementary School for the third annual Sodexo’s Future Chefs Competition.
Their task was to create a kid friendly healthy snack in less than an hour. Once they finished, five judges taste tested each one, awarding bonus points if the chef’s used apples, turkey, pineapple, tortillas or yogurt.
“It was awesome; some of their plate presentations were just gorgeous, and you can just tell that the students were so passionate about what they were making,” said Barbara Brown, General Manager for Sodexo in Naperville District 203.
The big winner of the night, Fabianna Marin-Gallucci.
“I was really really surprised and really really happy at the same time. I worked very very hard. It took me about an hour to write the recipe and it’s really happy that I won,” said Maplebrook Elementary 5th Grader, Marin-Gallucci.
Her winning snack was a Hawaiian Rice Pizza, which is like a ham and cheese pizza but with rice cakes instead of dough.
“I had the rice cakes then added one teaspoon of tomato sauce, then the cheese, shredded mozzarella cheese, with pieces of pineapple and pieces of ham,” said Marin-Gallucci.
Fabianna wasn’t the only winner, five other cooks were singled out for unique top honors, and each chef was awarded a medal and cookbook for their participation.
“I think the fact that kids are so aware of healthy foods, which of course is the purpose of it, is to educate kids and get them involved with healthy foods and healthy preparations of foods and I think that will go a long way,” said Brown.
Barbara’s company Sodexo, is a partner in First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move initiative to end childhood obesity.
