Today, a small group of people held a funeral for U.S. Democracy. It’s a continuation of the Occupy Naperville movement that has been going on every Saturday since October 22nd. The group hopes to gain attention for their message that the government caters to businesses, the one percent, and not the people, the 99%.
Today’s twist was to mark the second Anniversary of a Supreme Court ruling that, according to the constitution, the government cannot place a limit on independent spending for political purposes by corporations and unions.
“A corporation now can spend a billion dollars, I don’t have a billion dollars so my vote is drowned out by a nonperson,” said Steve Alesch, Lead Organizer.
They walked through downtown Naperville spreading the message, and their goal of adding an amendment to the constitution to get corporate money out of politics.
“Fix the country, fix our democracy, and put the people in power and make the corporations subservient to the people,” said Alesch.
Along the way they made a few stops to shame national banks. Then they continued proceeding throughout downtown with their funeral march.
