A particular parcel of land was the center of debate during the latest city council meeting. After a two and a half hour discussion council voted against “Freedom Plaza”
The proposed project would bring an Embassy Suites hotel with a large conference center, a Pita Inn, and an Alzheimer’s Assisted Living facility to a plot of vacant land along the I-88 corridor.
Petitioners expected the potential development to bring more than 1,000 jobs, including 650 construction jobs and more than 360 permanent staff.
Councilmen argued that while they weren’t opposed to improving the local economy, they weren’t sure an Alzheimer’s facility should be built in that area
Council voted 6 to 3 to deny rezoning to make way for the Alzheimer’s facility but approved a land permit for the hotel and restaurant.
