Focus 203

Parents gathered at Naperville Central High School on the evening of October 28th, to find out how District 203 is incorporating technology into their classrooms.

“Tonight we will only focus on blended learning, which is an instructional design that leverages both instructional time in the classroom and online learning opportunities both inside the classroom and outside of the classroom,” said Dr. Jennifer Hester, Chief Academic Officer for District 203.

As part of the District’s Digital Learning Initiative every 203 high school student has a Chromebook, with many junior high and elementary students also participating in a pilot program for the new technology.

Teachers and students gave presentations on how the tech tools have created new opportunities in the classroom.

Health Education Teacher and Technology Integration Specialist at Naperville Central, Jennifer Madden explains, “I think the biggest one was efficiencies, both teachers and students feel that things are moving very efficiently. As teachers we can get through material a lot quicker, students are finding that they are getting more organized, and they’re able to organize in a way that’s good for them.”

Presenters also emphasized the convenience that the Chromebooks provide.

“Last year I forgot a lot of things at school and I always had to ask my friends ‘what is the homework’ ask them to send me pictures of the homework, but this year I can just access the homework and the books and submit it all online,” said Wagner Osborne, an 8th grade student at Washington Junior High.

“You’ve got everything at your fingertips. Anything you need to access you can access with that,” continued Madden.

Parents who may have been apprehensive about the laptops at first, were able to ask questions, express opinions and learn more.

“First of all I thought of the cost involved to the district and to the tax payers, but when I saw how she responded to it and what she was doing I was totally impressed. Because I think it is very cost effective especially with the saving of the paper,” said Reba Osborne, mother of Wagner.

The next Focus 203 session will be in January.
