The Naperville Fire Department has been awarded a federal grant.
The department will get $1,002,000 dollars from FEMA, which is part of the Department of Homeland Security.
The funding is provided through Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.
The staffing for adequate fire and emergency response, or SAFER program, seeks to enhance a department’s ability to maintain 24 hour staffing, and ensures communities have adequate protection from fires.
“This money will help us hire three firefighter paramedics to ensure our residents are taken care of,” said Fire Chief Puknaitis.
In fiscal year 2013, the program will award approximately $320,000,000 dollars directly to fire departments around the country.
