Families enjoyed one really “cool” demonstration at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory.
Engineer Jerry Zimmerman, also known as “Mr. Freeze” showed what can happen when mixing liquid nitrogen with other items.
The demonstration was just one of many activities during Fermilab’s annual open house.
Folks also took a guided tour of part of the facility, including the linear particle accelerator while in the atrium, children enjoyed hands-on exhibits during a “Physics Carnival.” Five local schools contributed their own exhibits, including one on polarization from Naperville North High School and ones on electricity and electromagnetic force from Naperville Central High School.
About three thousand residents came to the free event and those that work for Fermilab hope it will spark an interest in science for all the children.
