Fatal Crash In Quarry Lake

The Naperville Police Department (NPD) has released details about a crash near Downtown Naperville overnight.

Around 2:00 a.m. Saturday morning, both the NPD and the Naperville Fire Department (NFD) arrived at the intersection of Aurora and Eagle, near Naper Settlement, to respond to a vehicle that crashed into the Park District quarry.

The NPD’s initial investigation revealed that a 2007 Chevrolet Impala was driving westbound on Aurora, left the road at Earle Street, crashed through trees and landed into the quarry. The Impala was submerged in up to 70 feet of water.

The vehicle’s driver, identified as Michael T. Szot, 21, of Geneva, was able to escape from the vehicle. He was then transported to Edward Hospital where he was treated and released.

Two passengers were also in the vehicle, but were unable to escape. The two victims were rescued by Fire and Police Divers and taken to Edward Hospital where they were pronounced dead.

The deceased passengers have been identified as Mihirtej Boddupalli, 21, of Lisle and Sajaad Safiullah Syed, 21, of Naperville. Both men were graduates of Naperville North High School according to their Facebook profiles.

Szot was arrested after his release from Edward Hospital and charged with four counts of Aggravated Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol Causing the Death of Another, which is a Class 2 Felony. As well as two counts of Reckless Homicide.

Members of the NPD’s Traffic Unit who are specially trained in accident reconstruction responded to the scene to investigate the accident. The accident is still under investigation.

The NFD and NPD, as well as the Lisle-Woodridge Fire Department, Downers Grove Fire Department and Aurora Fire Department dive rescue teams all responded to the scene and assisted in the recovery.

The NPD is asking anyone with information regarding the accident or the vehicle to contact the its Traffic Unit at 630-305-5285.
