Family Shelter Service of Metropolitan Family Services DuPage has hosted a holiday shop for about 15 years.
Helping Those Who Need It Most
It provides families who have been affected by domestic violence a chance to give their children a Christmas at a dark time in their lives.
“Domestic violence survivors and their children basically have had all of their hope and dignity removed from them, torn way,” said Lauren DeSimone, director of development at the shelter. “And holiday shop is one way that we give them hope and give them a chance to have the holiday season like a normal family.”
Lots to Choose From
Parents can pick out gifts for their children like at a regular store, then head over to other rooms to grab blankets, scarves, hats, and mittens.
This year’s event was sponsored by 100 Women Who Care. One member said they’re proud to support such a worthy cause of Family Shelter Service.
“I think we as an organization are very proud of the work that we do and I think we genuinely want to help people in our community,” said Christine Grygiel.
