The end of summer also means the days of fresh summer flowers in your home are almost gone. One local group known as the Weed Ladies have created homemade decorations out of weeds and cattails found in their own backyards. Over the last 40 years, the ladies have grown to incorporate silk flowers and ribbons in their decorations.
As the pink, blue and purple flowers of the summer season transition to red, gold and orange, it’s time to start thinking of fall.
“Autumn is a marvelous time; it’s a jeweled time,” said Cathi Schumacher, a member of the Weed Ladies.
But redecorating your house for the season doesn’t mean you have to spend a ton of money. The Weed Ladies spend hours all year round making homemade decorations out of silk flowers and dried items found in their own back yards. While they do sell their products, anyone can make their own. The Weed Ladies say while out enjoying a walk you can find a number of items to use for decorations, such as twigs, dried leaves or dried nuts.
“You need to go out and have some fun, go for a walk in the woods,” said Sharon Wisinski, a member of the Weed Ladies. “Pinecones and pods are great. If you have flowers and you’re not into drying them spray them with hairspray and that will get you through the season.”
“Grasses are a big interest,” said Schumacher. “This is some yarrow that was bright and yellow. You can take it and tie it up with a bunch of twine or anything you want, colorful ribbon. Then stand it up or stick it in a pot.”
Making your own decorations can make it easier to transition throughout the holidays without breaking the bank.
“Most people start to think about Halloween,” said Wisinski. “You can incorporate pumpkins. Fall is a long time, it carries until Thanksgiving.”
The Weed Ladies are having their annual fall sale September 15th-18th at the Jefferson Hill Shops.
