More than one hundred community members recently came together to celebrate patriotism for The Exchange Club of Naperville’s annual “One Nation Under God” breakfast at Meson Sabika.
Committee members presented the Abraham Lincoln award to CEO of Loaves & Fishes, Charles McLimans. It is given to someone that has made a great impact on the community. In February, Loaves & Fishes fed 2,399 households, 4,681 adults and 3,937 children for a total of 9,475 people.
“Food is a right it is not a privilege that freedom from hunger is also one of the liberties that we enjoy in this country,” said McLimans. “That’s why it is so important for all of us to support one another and to be in this all together.”
The American Spirit award was given to three residents that demonstrate a commitment to the “can do spirit” in the work and achievement for others.
This year’s winners were David Byrne of the Naperville Jaycees, Chuck Corrigan, President of West Suburban Irish and Donna Morsovillo, Founder/President of Operation Welcome You Home.
And six Proudly We Hail awards were given to those that properly displayed the American Flag.
Motivational speaker, John Blumberg gave the keynote address and reminded everyone that patriotism should be celebrated everyday and not just during the 4th of July.
“Sometimes I wonder if we really have any idea of what we have to truly be thankful for,” said Blumberg. “I think each of our award winners today certainly gave us a glimpse and a reminder of what we should not take for granted.”
In closing, everyone was invited to read the Exchange Clubs Mission Statement which is about people helping people in the belief that hope for tomorrow happens today.
