What may seem like a simple question is actually a chance for learning at this English Conversation Group, hosted by Literacy DuPage.
Every Wednesday morning, adults who are learning English get together in the conference room at the Naper Boulevard Library and talk about everything from international stock markets to hard boiled eggs.
“Essentially all we’re trying to do is to get them to talk and feel comfortable and they can make mistakes in the classroom here and nobody’s going to make fun of them,” said Mark Munoz, a tutor with Literacy DuPage.
This is just one of many English Conversation Groups that meet throughout DuPage County each week.
“It’s really just for the adult learners to have the opportunity to practice their spoken English and get some feedback, you know some of them might not have that opportunity in their day to day lives,” said Bernie Steiger, Executive Director of Literacy DuPage.
The 10 a.m. meetings are attended by learners from many countries, with differing levels of language experience, but all are encouraged to talk.
“I really recommend they come here to practice their English. Everyone who comes here contributes,” said Peng Fei, who attends the Conversation Group.
The free gatherings are facilitated by trained tutors from Literacy DuPage.
“We’re so grateful to have the volunteer tutors that lead the conversation groups or facilitate them because without them we couldn’t offer this and so many other services,” said Steiger.
And some have a personal connection to Literacy DuPage’s mission, like facilitator Mark Munoz, who didn’t know any English when he moved from Mexico to Chicago as a teenager.
“It’s a way for me to pay back all the people who helped my along the way when I was learning English. Back in those days we didn’t have groups like this and we didn’t have the tools like this,” said Munoz.
Thanks to Literacy DuPage and tutors like Munoz, todays English Language Learners in Naperville have this safe place to practice and learn.
All adult English-as-a-second-language learners are welcome to stop by, no registration required.
