School District 204’s fiscal year 2012 wrapped up $171,000 in the red. The district attributes part of the deficit to a decrease in the number of school lunches bought and transportation costs for the 136 homeless students throughout 204.
Over the past four years District 204 has had to make $40 million worth of cutbacks due to the recession, cost of implementing higher education standards, teacher evaluations and reductions in state funding.
Illinois owes the district $5.5 million.
Fiscal year 2013 includes $9.4 million worth of cuts already made by laying off about 114 teachers, support staff and administrators, eliminating athletic programs and closing a school.
District officials project the 2013 budget will end in the black by $429,000.
