Edward Hospital Expansion

Over the past ten years Edward Hospital has doubled their square footage, and they are looking to grow even more. They recently revealed plans to expand their Naperville campus. The hospital put in an application with the Illinois Facilities and Services Review Board to add to the West Building.

“We’re going to be adding two additional floors to our Naperville campus for both intensive care patients and medical surgical patients,” said Brian Davis, Vice President of Marketing and Government Relations at Edward Hospital.

The additional floors would allow the hospital to add a physical therapy gym, a storage area, and about 50 extra beds; 36 for orthopedic and spine patients and 24 for the ICU. Edward currently has approximately 309 beds plus about 100 at Linden Oaks, their behavioral health hospital.

“We’re at capacity, I’d say a small portion of the time, but you have to push it,” said Davis. “You have to plan ahead in Healthcare, so we know with our growth and what we’re doing right now we’ve got to be prepared.”

The Project will cost Edward about $63.7 million.

“We’re a healthy organization, but we are a not-for-profit, we invest back into the facility and that’s what we’re doing here,” said Davis.

Edward has tried, without success, for a number of years to build a full service hospital in Plainfield.

“What this is really a result of is a demand in our core primary service area, which includes Plainfield,” said Davis. “We have a 60 acre campus, we’ve invested $100 million down there. We’re growing tremendously in Plainfield and in Naperville and the surrounding areas. We still want to bring a hospital to Plainfield in the future, but right now this is our best alternative.”

The review is tentatively scheduled for February 2012. If approved, construction could start in the Spring and be completed by 2013.

The two-floor expansion is one of many construction projects Edward is working on. Next year they plan to finish the expansion on the Edward Healthcare Center in Bolingbrook, open Illinois’ first Ronald McDonald Family Room in Naperville and finish a one-story addition to Linden Oaks.
