Taking on Calculus BC as a junior at Neuqua Valley High School, Anish Aggarwal found himself struggling.
“I was failing it, and so my parents told me to seek outside help, the tutors in the area charge anywhere from $60-$80 an hour, and I was a victim of that, I paid ten lessons and paid hundreds of dollars,” said Aggarwal, Founder of Top Tier Learning.
But breaking the bank for outside learning didn’t sit well with him.
“I also thought yeah there must be a better way and the person sitting next to me in that class had an A and we were receiving the same information so why couldn’t he tutor me?” said Aggarwal.
So in February 2014, he started Top Tier Learning, a service in which high school seniors tutor younger students at a reasonable price.
“These tutors are P.E. leaders, they’re student advisors, they hold leadership positions, really role model kids that I found and as a result I’m able to pay these tutors about almost double minimum wage, and the parents also get to save their money and i also get the great experience about running this all,” said Aggarwal.
Now in its second year, Anish and his staff of 70 have partnered with the YMCA, Eola Community Center, District 203 and 204, and even branched out to areas in California and New York.
The private lessons that are offered for $20-$27 an hour, compared to other services more than double that rate, are one of the many reasons parents have chosen Top Tier Learning.
“The tutor comes home and it’s affordable and it’s the collaboration between the tutor and student and parent. Once a week we would touch base and see how is my son doing, what are his needs and we would make a need based goal, so it was need based every week whatever he needed help with, my son I saw a big difference in the satisfaction level, he was happy he was connecting with his tutor,” said Ayesha Afridi, Faaris’ Mom.
And Ayesha’s son Faaris says the added bonus is knowing his tutors were once right in his shoes.
“In the past it would take a long time for them to reach my level, like they wouldn’t understand what help I needed, but when I went to Top Tier the tutor I got knew exactly what I needed help on because he was also in high school,” said Faaris Afridi, Client of Top Tier Learning.
As a small business owner, 18-year-old, Anish has earned dozens of scholarships, but says the one thing he’s most thankful for, is the chance to live out his passion.
“I’ve learned to trust your community, meaning I trusted my community because I believed that Naperville would give a chance to a high school student who is willing to prove himself,” said Aggarwal.
Anish will be attending the University of Texas this fall majoring in Business.
