On your mark, get set, go!
Nearly 1,000 racers from all 14 District 203 elementary schools gathered at Mill Street for the 7th annual Crosstown Classic.
“The running was really tiring!” said Lauren R, a fifth grade runner from Mill Street.
“It was fun!” said Lauren C, a fourth grade runner from Mill Street.
Runners from kindergarten through fifth grade competed in 400 and 800 meter races, and third through fifth graders could also compete in a mile race.
“I did the 400 meter kindergarten to 2nd grade, it was fun,” said Cameron H, a second grader from Steeple Run.
Organized by Mill Street art teacher and Run Club coach Chuck Hoff, the motto of the Classic is “run because you can.”
“Those kids that have certain abilities that we look at as restrictive, they’re out here running. They’re out here showing us that it isn’t impossible,” explained Hoff. “We started the motto several years ago, but it really caught on last year and it’s been something fun for the kids to identify with.”
Mill Street took home the first place golden shoes, followed by Highlands in second and Ranchview in third.
