In the next few years, almost every student in District 203 will have a Chromebook. So for this session, the district aimed to empower parents in the increasingly digital world.
Dr. Devorah Heitner, founder of Raising Digital Natives, spoke to parents about how to help their children become responsible digital citizens.
“We don’t want to teach kids that digital mistakes are a disaster and your life is over, we teach kids that you’re responsible for what you do and if you make a mistake you have to make it right as best you can,” said Dr. Heitner.
Dr. Heitner stressed the importance of not just monitoring your kids online but also modeling good tech habits to help them learn digital responsibility.
She explains, “we shouldn’t just spy on our kids, if we are monitoring we should let them know and why, and let them know what we’re looking for. Then as they get older we should be taking more and more steps back from doing that because ultimately when they go off to college or in their careers, we’re not going to be monitoring them anymore so at some point they need to be able to make good decisions on their own.”
After the presentation, attendees had the opportunity to provide feedback on their concerns and hopes for technology in 203.
