This Earth Day, green turned to gold for a local college.
On April 22, North Central College was awarded the gold level of sustainability from the Illinois Sustainable Technology Center.
“We had to reach bronze, then silver, then gold levels of the compact. And by reaching all of those, some of the things we had to do was start tracking our energy use, water use, our waste generation. We also had to set sustainability goals which was the first time that we did that. So it’s really making us go further than ever before in accomplishing sustainability,” said Brittany Graham, North Central College’s Sustainability Coordinator.
The school is now one of 22 elite colleges who have achieved a high standard of efficiency.
Students celebrated Earth Day on campus by playing games, making pledges, and raising an awareness of sustainability.
The college will continue their earth-friendly endeavors with their new science center, through the installation of LED lights and eco-friendly lab equipment.
