April 22nd marked Earth Day for 2013 and one area school celebrated with big news.
Friends and family of District 203’s Ann Reid Early Childhood Center came together to celebrate the installation of their Earth Flag.
The Earth Flag is a symbol that demonstrates the school’s commitment to being “earth friendly” by teaching sustainability and environmental awareness.
The school did a lot of work to be awarded such an honor. This included collecting old gyms shoes, starting to plant a garden, and recycling milk cartons.
“They remind each other. If somebody’s going to throw away a milk carton, they remind each other that, “No, no, that’s not what you do, you have to recycle!,” said Principal Jeannie Matula.
Ann Reid Early Childhood Center is the first pre-school in the state to earn this award and the first pre-school in the country to be LEED certified, which stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.
