The DuPage County Health Department’s Community Center was officially opened recently.
The 33,000 sq. foot facility is located on the DuPage County Government Campus and was built to take a different approach to serving those with mental health needs.
“This really breaks down the barriers to providing behavioral health services. Many times the buildings that do that look like a hospital, like an institution, sterile settings. This is an inviting structure and we think it will go a long way towards bringing in people,” said Dave Hass, Public Information Officer with the DuPage County Health Department.
Features of the Community Center include a 24/7 Crisis Center with respite beds for emergency stays, a relaxed living room to calm visitors and conference rooms to discuss the best plan of action.
The cost of the building was approximately $11 million and was covered by the Health Department.
The Health Department has also partnered with the National Alliance on Mental Illness DuPage to share the new space.
