How to prevent teens from using drugs-that was the goal of two recent heroin forums in Naperville. School districts 203 and 204 recently partnered with the Naperville and Aurora Police Departments to present the forums at Naperville North and Neuqua Valley High Schools.
Police detectives told parents most teens who use heroin start with marijuana, alcohol, or prescription pills. They said parents need to present a united front when it comes to drugs and make sure their kids are getting the same message from each other.
Addiction specialists warned that should their kids start using, seeking professional help is the best way to get teens through their addictions.
“As parents, we can’t deal with it,” said Claudia Evenson, Director of Outreach for Rosecrance. “Biologically, psychologically, socially, and spiritually it affects all people.”
Other tips: communicate with your child. Kids who learn about drugs at home are 50% less likely to use. Monitor where they are and who they’re with. Don’t let your child go to an unsupervised home, and set age appropriate limits.
If you couldn’t make the forums, NCTV17 recorded Tuesday’s event at Naperville North and will rebroadcast the discussion in its entirety.
