Just like us our dogs need exercise for healthy living, but sometimes squeezing in a walk or run with your pooch can be difficult. That’s where Naperville residents John and Erica Reh come in.
About three years ago, the Rehs decided to leave the corporate world behind and start their own business Dogs Love Running! In addition to dog walking and pet sitting, Dogs Love Running! will actually run along with your four-legged friend to get out a little pent up energy.
“Getting outside is just a natural way for them to expend that energy,” said John. “It’s like a little child, they have to do something, so that typically ends up in bad behavior. If they just had more exercise they would probably get rid of all that and be a little bit more amiable inside the home.”
Most dogs need about 30 minutes of exercise a day, which can be tough to squeeze in when you’re at work or unable to walk or run with your dog. So Dogs Love Running! will go to your home and take your dog out for a little fresh air.
“What we do is try to make pets live longer and behave better through exercise,” said John. “If we can do that we’re going to make pets happy which is our ultimate mission.”
John says when they first started he would run up to 20 miles a day five to six days a week. They realized the dogs weren’t the only ones getting tired and they needed to hire some help. The main criteria: love running and of course, love dogs. Brett Garrett started working at Dogs Love Running! about a year ago and runs with about four or five dogs a day.
“They’re pretty excited to see you,” said Garrett. “Most dogs like going for walks and runs are just that much better. Then we get home and they’re tired and ready for some water and to take the rest of the day easy since they got their workout in.”
18 months into the business, the Rehs were so busy they wanted to expand and thought franchising would be the way to go. Now they have two more franchises and cover Naperville, Wheaton, Lisle, Bolingbrook and Plainfield.
“I’ve always been interested in dog behavior and I know that a tired dog is a really good dog,” said Heidi Janss, Franchise Owner of Dogs Love Running!
“They’re happy to see us. When we come back from our run their tongues are hanging out, they’re laying on the floor, we know we have done a good job. The clients also love it. We’ve had people that have started up with us and have said ‘Oh my goodness! I can tell a difference when I come home, my dog is not as crazy because you’ve been with them during the day.’”
Dogs Love Running! will run with any breed and size of dog. They offer visits from 15 to 60 minutes. For more information visit dogsloverunning.com.
