The fourth annual Dodgin’ 4 Lou Gehrig’s Disease Dodge Ball Tournament was held to raise money for the Les Turner ALS Foundation.
Naperville Central students Taylor Morrissey and Delaney Gibbons created the event in 2012 to support their gym teacher, Chris Benyo, whose wife, Denise Dimarzo was diagnosed with ALS back in 2010.
The neurological disease causes muscular weakness, difficulty speaking and swallowing and complete paralysis in the body.
This year, the girls raised just over $20,000, but the experience has taught them something that money can’t buy.
“It’s just really taught me that you can’t take life for granted, that diseases are things that can take you at any moment. You just need to appreciate it everyday and cherish the people that are with you because they can be gone whenever,” said Gibbons.
Taylor and Delaney said the success of the event wouldn’t be possible without the help of the community.
