Do You Know What to Do?

Emergencies can happen anytime, anywhere. From natural disasters, to cyber attacks, to acts of terrorism. This September, Naperville residents are learning what to do in case of an emergency as part of the seventh annual National Preparedness Month.

Emergency agencies like the Community Emergency Response Team (C.E.R.T.), Emergency Management Agency, and even Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT) unit gathered together at the Naperville Municipal Center for an open house to help residents understand what to do in case of an emergency, and not to panic if one does happen.

“People need to understand that there may be instances when our professional paid responders are unable to respond to an emergency,” said Richard Jenner, a four-year member of C.E.R.T. “We encourage them to learn techniques and to train themselves to take care of themselves and their families and neighbors and friends in emergencies.”

For 11-year-old Adam Brown, an event like this is exactly what he needed.
“I’m working on the Emergency Preparedness Badge for Boy Scouts,” said Brown. “I thought this would be a really good place to find out what the City of
Naperville does to respond in emergency situations.

I’ve seen all the cool gadgets and I got a bunch of pamphlets and stuff that they have here and can really talk to them and see what they do and all the cool vehicles are outside.”

And some of those vehicles outside can be pretty intimidating, like the mobile command center, a truck made of lights, and the S.W.A.T. truck. Steve Licht is a Firefighter here in Naperville, and he brought his three kids to prove to them that those big vehicles aren’t so scary after all.

“I thought today was pretty cool, it was pretty neat, seeing all the armored vehicles,” said Nathaniel Licht. “It feels really good to see all this really awesome stuff.”

In addition to the open house, the city has an emergency preparedness guide with tips for residents. That guide is available on their website at
