District 204 eLo Update

At the latest 204 Board Meeting, the district recognized their strides in a recently launched program.

Starting in the fall of 2014, eLo, or Expanding Learning Opportunities, offered a blended learning environment consisting of online courses for high school students.

In their most recent update, eLo announced they are an official provider of NCAA approved core courses for student athletes.

“We’re very excited. When we initially launched our core courses, when I say core that means social studies, English math and science, they were not NCAA approved,” said Kip Pygman, Director of the eLo Consortium. “Which means that if we had a student athlete, one that was going to compete at the college level division one or two, those courses wouldn’t count toward his scholarship eligibility. So we worked with the NC organization for about 6 months last year, and we were finally able to become our own entity which means that any core course we offer will be NCAA approved.”

With over 1,000 students and 20 teachers participating in the District 204 eLo program, the board is eager to see it move forward.

“It’s just as much tough work as they do in the classroom, as they will online. And that’s what we want for our kids because we want them to take ownership and responsibility and accountability,” said Board Member Mark Rising.

“It is a great option that they have. I really applaud and I’m glad to see that this is a step we’re taking. I think it shows how future oriented we are,” added Board Member Cathy Piehl.

eLo currently offers 72 different online courses to help students continue to learn outside the classroom.
