After nearly 70 years the act of a local WWII veteran is finally being acknowledged.
Congresswoman Judy Biggert presented the Distinguished Flying Cross to Naperville resident Jane Wulf in honor of her husband Elmer Wulf, who passed away in 2010.
In 1945, Wulf was piloting a B-17 Flying Fortress when it suffered major flak damage and lost three of the plane’s four engines. Wulf kept the plane in the air long enough for all the crew members to parachute out before he made a crash landing.
At the award presentation, Jane Wulf was joined by family members and Elmer’s co-pilot Hugh “Robbie” Robinson.
The Distinguished Flying Cross is awarded to members of the U.S. military who showcase heroism or achievement in aviation.
