Frisbees were flying and tails were wagging during a local dog-disc tournament.
42 canines and their partners bore the heat and came out to the Riverwalk Grand Pavilion for the competition. Participants of all ages had 60-seconds to toss a Frisbee to their canine companions – the longer the throw the more points for a catch.
Members of the group Midwest Disc Dog brought their best tosses to the tournament, including Naperville resident Stephanie Zdunek.
“It’s a great group of people. Dog’s have a great time. Everybody cheers everybody on,” she said. “It’s like a family and that’s what matters.”
“Most of the dogs were turned over because they were un-trainable or too high energy,” said Rob Wyka, a board member for the Midwest Disc Dog club. “Their previous owners didn’t know how to train them or calm them down and we found out they just need some sort of an outlet and that outlet’s usually Frisbee. Fifteen minutes of Frisbees better than a three-mile walk.
There was also a whole lot of messing around in a free-style competition, where contestants had 2 minutes to string together as many tricks as they can, choreographed to music.
Winners received some bling for their efforts. The big champion of the day was Andrew Han of Milwaukee who took first place overall.
“It feels pretty good. You always try to go out there and win but it’s just fun to hang out with your friends, play with your dog,” said Han. “The only bummer about today is it’s really hot today but other than that it was fun.”
The Windy City K-9 Disc Club sponsored the event. Co-founder and judge of the competition Tom Wehrli, says above all the sports is about the connection between the players and man’s best friend.
“At the end of the day, if you’ve gone out & play Frisbee with your dog, get ‘em a little exercise, a little attention – it’s a never-ending love for them. The bond is huge to spend time with the dog.”
There will be an even bigger disc-dog championship at the same field during Labor Day weekend.
